YOUTH SPEAKS
The Rotary Club of Wetherby & District have been proud to support the Youth Speaks scheme. This scheme boosts the confidence and communication skills of local primary school children, with nearly 800 pupils across five Wetherby area schools participating last year.
Categories and structure: Open to Key Stage 1 (ages 5–7) and Key Stage 2 (ages 7–11), with children working in teams of 3 to 6 to present a topic of their choice to a panel of Rotarian judges.
Rules: Teams must complete all research and create visual aids independently without parental help or electronic devices. Clear and audible speaking is required.
Awards & Funding: Winning schools and team members receive presentation shields, all entrants receive certificates, and every participating school receives a £1,000 grant funded by local business sponsors.
Seeing this scheme live in action is the best way to experience the magic of this event, the enthusiasm of the children and the sheer quality of their contribution.
ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS
Every year our club chooses a local school pupil aged between 16 and 18, to participate in this event.
Some compare it to “Outward Bound” or the “Prince Phillip Award Scheme” but in our opinion it is better than both of those!
The pupil is taken by us to the event grounds in the Hebden Bridge area. There he or she joins up with around 30 other local pupils to receive skilled instruction in such things as building a raft to cross a river. The instructors are very skilled and bring out the best in the pupils over a period of 4 days.
Without exception every young adult who has taken part has felt that their lives have been changed for the better by participation in this event and that they have developed new skills and new attitudes.
ANIMAL CHARITY SUPPORT
The club helps a local charity to distribute funds to relieve animal suffering. As long as the animals are suffering, we are here to help them.

Grants are available for animals of all types. Dogs and cats are the most common, but the charity has supported otters, hedgehogs, snakes and even spiders!

Last year we were involved in around £100,000 worth of grants to support the relief of suffering of animals and there are plenty more in the pipeline.

We don't just support the larger organisations such as PDSA and Dogs Trust. We also help small local people who, for example, take in a couple of cats or dogs to look after them. You don’t need to be a registered charity to receive a grant just so long as you are providing help to animals in distress.

Over the years Wetherby & District Rotary Club have collaborated with the Physionet Charity in sourcing disability aids from individuals and the care institutions for re-cycling which are then refurbished if needed, prior to being shipped to those deserving in other less fortunate countries.
Of the 202 shipments that Physionet have made to date, 32 trucks have been sent to Ukraine alongside financial help from the club.

OTHER CLUB COLLABERATIONS
This hospice, located only a few miles from Wetherby, provides terminal care for children. We are pleased to have supported Martin House for many years and will continue to do so.

We have recently helped this charity buy a new helicopter. Its work is absolutely essential in rescuing walkers, hikers and climbers from inaccessible places as well as rushing car accident victims to hospital.

Nick Dyson has supported Rotary's care to animal welfare, offering financial support for subsistence, shelter, and medical treatment.
Rotary assist both independent local rescue individuals and recognised regional animal charities to safeguard vulnerable animals in our community.
This charity aims to provide safe drinking water by supplying humanitarian aid boxes which contain a water filter alongside cooking utensils, hygiene products, tools and shelter materials. So far, it has delivered over 125,000 boxes to areas affected by conflict, floods and earthquakes such as Nepal and Ukraine. Whilst not on our doorstep (it was founded by the Rotary Club of Wirksworth in Derbyshire) we feel that it is worthy of our support.
